The Thaumaturge zabiera nas w podróż do Warszawy z 1905 roku. To wielokulturowa metropolia, w której pod nosem wyższych sfer organizujących wystawne bale mają miejsce porachunki kryminalistów w mrocznych uliczkach. Miasto, znajdujące się w strefie wpływów rosyjskiego caratu, jest prawdziwym tyglem, zamieszkiwanym między innymi przez polskich mieszczan, żydowskich kupców oraz rosyjskich żołnierzy.
Warszawa to również teren działań tytułowych taumaturgów – ludzi obdarzonych nadnaturalnymi zdolnościami, którzy mogą dostrzegać i wykorzystywać do swoich potrzeb ezoteryczne istoty zwane salutorami. Jednym z takich taumaturgów jest główny bohater opisywanej produkcji, czyli Wiktor Szulski, który przybywa do Warszawy w celu załatwienia spraw rodzinnych. Protagonista wykorzystuje swoje umiejętności, by odkryć tajemnice miasta, a także poznać sekrety skrywane przez jego mieszkańców.
Warto odnotować, że choć opowiedziana tu historia jest fikcyjna, wzbogaca ją obecność rzeczywistych postaci i miejsc w Warszawie, którą poddano dość drobiazgowej rekonstrukcji.
