Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening to strategia osadzona w realiach japońskiej ery Sengoku. Zarządzanie klanem, tworzenie armii oraz rozwój gospodarki odbywa się w systemie turowym. Natomiast bitwy toczone są w czasie rzeczywistym.

Tak jak wszystkie poprzednie odsłony serii, gra przenosi nas do Japonii w erze Sengoku (XV-XVI wiek), która charakteryzowała się ciągiem wojen między lokalnymi władcami (daimyo). Gracz wciela się w jednego z nich i jego celem staje się podporządkowanie sobie całego Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni.
