The Bard's Tale IV to pełnoprawna czwarta odsłona słynnej serii dungeon-crawlerów, zapoczątkowanej w 1985 roku grą The Bard's Tale. Tytuł stworzony przez studio inXile Entertainement, znane fanom RPG-ów dzięki grom Torment: Tides of Numenera, Hunted: Kuźnia Demona oraz Wasteland 2. The Bard's Tale IV jest w założeniu powrotem do korzeni serii, której początki sięgają połowy lat 80. Nad projektem, który powstał dzięki zbiórce pieniędzy w serwisie Kickstarter, czuwał Brian Fargo. Deweloper zaczynał karierę w firmie Interplay i na koncie ma tytuły, takie jak Bard's Tale, Neuromancer, Dragon Wars, Fallout 1 oraz Fallout 2, Stonekeep, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment.

W The Bard's Tale IV gracze ponownie przenoszą się do oryginalnego świata fantasy znanego z poprzednich części serii, który pełnymi garściami czerpie inspirację ze szkockiej oraz celtyckiej kultury i mitologii. Przygodę rozpoczynamy w rozległym mieście Skara Brae, a stamtąd wyruszamy do licznych i niebezpiecznych ruin oraz podziemi. Gracze tworzą własną drużynę śmiałków, wybierając spośród wielu dostępnych ras, takich jak elfy, ludzie czy pół-orki oraz klas postaci.

Rozgrywka przebiega w sposób znany z wielu innych klasycznych dungeon-crawlerów. Gracze przemierzają nieliniowe labirynty podziemia oraz ruiny, które pełne są różnego rodzaju pułapek, a także zagadek logicznych. Niektóre z nich korzystają także z kompleksowego silnika fizycznego. Lokacje zostały zbudowane na planie siatki. Po jej polach poruszają się wszystkie postacie oraz ich przeciwnicy. InExile zdecydowało się na zastosowanie fazowego trybu turowego. Oznacza to, że w naszej turze bohaterowie wykonują wszystkie swoje akcje równocześnie. Dzięki temu możemy skorzystać z systemu synergicznych umiejętności. Niektóre ataki oraz zdolności herosów wpływają bowiem na siebie nawzajem. Duże znacznie ma także magiczna muzyka naszych bardów, która szybko zmieni sytuację na polu bitwy. Co ciekawe, twórcy zadbali o autentyczność i ballady, które usłyszymy zostały nagrane specjalnie na potrzeby produkcji w gaelickim akcencie języka szkockiego.

Grę napędza silnik Unreal Engine 4. Oznacza to, że deweloperzy otrzymali o wiele większe możliwości techniczne niż w przypadku swoich poprzednich dzieł. Przy projektowaniu poziomów oraz elementów scenografii wykorzystano nawet metodę fotogrametrii, pozwalającą skanować obiekty ze świata rzeczywistego i zamieniać je w fotorealistyczne modele 3D.
