Gra osadzona jest w uniwersum marki BattleTech. Akcja rozpoczyna się w 3015 roku i przenosi nas w odległe rejony skolonizowanej części galaktyki, znane jako Inner Sphere. Dawniej terytorium tym rządziła Gwiezdna Liga, ale wewnętrzne spory doprowadziły ostatecznie do jej rozwiązania i powstania pięciu rywalizujących nacji, zarządzanych przez tzw. Wielkie Domy. Następne kilkaset lat spędziły one na nieustających walkach o planety i zasoby.
My dołączymy do konfliktu w trakcie tzw. Trzeciej Wojny Sukcesyjnej, która trwa już od 150 lat i nie zanosi się, aby szybko miała dobiec końca. Wcielamy się w młodego najemnika, dopiero zaczynającego karierę jako pilot mecha. Kampania obejmuje okres 35 lat, pozwalając nam rozwinąć biznes od małej jednostki aż po potężną korporację najemniczą.
