Dziesięć lat temu światem zatrzęsła Wielka Zapaść, która w tajemniczy sposób doprowadziła do powstania hybrydowego gatunku - dzieci, które są częściowo ludźmi, a częściowo zwierzętami. Nie wiedząc, czy hybrydy są rezultatem, czy też może przyczyną siejącego spustoszenie wirusa, wielu ludzi reaguje na nie strachem i przemocą. Gus (Christian Convery) - pół chłopiec, pół jeleń - przez ostatnią dekadę żył bezpiecznie w swoim leśnym schronieniu. Pewnego dnia niespodziewanie poznaje samotnego wędrowca o imieniu Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). Wspólnie wyruszają w pełną niezwykłych przygód podróż po postapokaliptycznej Ameryce w poszukiwaniu odpowiedzi na dręczące ich pytania: o narodziny Gusa, przeszłość Jepperda i prawdziwe znaczenie słowa "dom". Na swojej drodze spotykają nieoczekiwanych sojuszników i wrogów, a Gus szybko odkrywa, że bujny, niebezpieczny świat poza granicami lasu jest o wiele bardziej skomplikowany, niż kiedykolwiek przypuszczał.
